“The beauty of fragrance is that it speaks to your heart,… and hopefully someone else’s.” – Elizabeth Taylor.

Have you ever noticed how your behavior changes when you smell something? For instance, sniffing your mother’s cooking can make you feel hungry even though you’re not. Or when you’re at a spa, you feel utterly relaxed.

A whiff of perfume in a department store might sometimes bring back memories of a specific person. On the other hand, a stench or foul odor makes us feel unpleasant. All of them are odor-related impacts.

Our sense of smell is the most powerful of the five senses. Furthermore, it’s the one that is most closely associated with memory and emotions. We are more likely to remember anything we smell than anything we see, hear, or touch because smell accounts for 75% of our feelings. It’s because the olfactory nerve is connected to the part of the brain that monitors memories and emotions.

The smell occurs in the back of the nose. Millions of sensory neurons lie in a layer of tissue known as the olfactory gland. The tips of these cells contain proteins called receptors, which attract odor molecules.

On the other hand, the olfactory bulb is responsible for the sense of smell. It’s a component at the front of the brain that conveys information to the body’s central command section for further processing. Odors travel directly to the limbic system, which affects emotion and memory. In addition, olfactory signals reach the limbic system exceptionally quickly.

Humans have around 450 different types of olfactory receptors. A receptor can be activated by several odor molecules, while each odor molecule can activate numerous distinct types of receptors. That’s why we can perceive a wide range of aromas due to the complexity of the receptors. Therefore, a single scent can be a mixture of odor molecules working on several receptors.

The olfactory nerve is intimately linked to the brain area that regulates our mood, attention, memory, and emotion. As a result, our behavior or attitude shifts when we inhale scents. Surprisingly, studies suggest that pleasant smells can boost one’s mood by 40%.

Furthermore, inhaling pleasurable aromas can also aid with respiratory issues, nasal congestion, sleeplessness, pain management, stress, and anxiety.

Hence, many individuals, even businesses, are turning to scents to enhance their overall well-being and company performance.

Aromatherapy is a holistic therapeutic strategy that utilizes fragrant essential oils to help improve overall well-being. Others refer to it as the essential oil treatment. This ancient ritual was primarily for religious and medical purposes.

Essential oils are plant extracts. Contrary to popular belief, these oils are not greasy. Instead, they include oil-soluble plant compounds. This complex chemistry gives essential oils their medicinal properties, explaining why different essential oils might have similar effects.

You can use aromatherapy through:

1. Inhalation – the oils are distributed into the air using a diffuser or spray. Alternatively, you might add essential oils to your steam bath.

2. Topical applications can add essential oils to massage oils, baths, and skincare products. For better circulation and absorption, massage the oil to the affected part.

Since essential oils can cause irritation, redness, and burning, they should not be applied directly to the skin. Instead, it’s best to dilute it with a carrier oil first. For safety reasons, conduct an allergy test before application.

Scentscaping, also known as smell design, is the art of incorporating odor at strategic spots to elicit specific feelings and create a distinctive atmosphere. It is a type of decoration prevalent in service industries such as hotels and spas. However, you may also do it at home. It comprises the careful placement of beautiful fragrance diffusers in various locations throughout your house or office building, each with a unique scent. You can make your perfume or have it customized to make it truly one-of-a-kind.

Moreover, scent marketing is a growing trend. Research shows that consumers view scented places as more luxurious and high-end. As a result, the product or service becomes more appealing.
